How I Hired a World-Class Team for the Cost of One San Francisco Engineer

Scaling Across Boarders

Would you rather spend $300,000 a year on a single engineer in San Francisco, or assemble an entire global team of ten for about the same price? It might sound impossible but I’ve done it, several times over. In this post, I’m going to share exactly how you can break out of the high-cost talent trap and build a world-class team of your own, all while drastically lowering your burn rate.

The Broken Game: Fighting the Local Talent War

The tech world has conditioned us to believe that to scale, you have to join the battle for talent in a handful of big cities – San Francisco, New York, London. That means sky-high salaries ($300K+ for a senior engineer, and up to $400K after benefits and perks) just to keep a single person on your team. If you’re running a growth startup without mountains of venture capital, this model simply doesn’t work. And honestly, it shouldn’t.

In reality, the world is full of equally talented engineers, designers, marketers, and operators who are hungry and ambitious, but living far from the tech epicenters. And often, you’ll find them at a third of the cost.

Here’s how I did it.

My Three Moves for Building a World-Class Global Team

1. Capture the Global Talent Arbitrage

Stop fishing in the same local pond as everyone else. The best engineers I’ve hired weren’t in San Francisco – they were in Pristina, Tirana, Buenos Aires, Lagos, and Warsaw. These professionals are just as driven and skilled as anyone in the Bay Area, and often even hungrier for the opportunity to make an impact.

2. Use AI to Orchestrate (Not More Managers!)

Here’s the secret sauce: instead of stacking your company with layers of middle managers, use AI tools to handle workflows, reporting, and scheduling. This approach lets you replace management overhead with efficient, automated code. It’s how you keep a distributed team humming without adding complexity or bloat.

3. Create Decentralized Trust Systems

Relationships and trust are still non-negotiable. But in a global team, you build trust by making sure everyone knows the playbook: clear outcomes, clear ownership, no micromanagement, and no waiting for permission. When everyone’s accountable and empowered, your team moves with a speed most companies can’t even imagine.

What I Built for One Engineer’s Price Tag

Instead of blowing my budget on a single superstar, here’s what I got for the same cost:

  • A UX designer
  • A full-stack developer
  • A growth marketer
  • A DevOps lead
  • A few SDRs to generate outbound sales

The results? Lower burn rate, faster shipping, happier customers, and most surprisingly of all less stress. And I didn’t need to raise a monster funding round just to make payroll.

The Takeaway: Build for the Future, Not the Past

This won’t be an easy transition your existing team will resist it at first. I’ve been through those fights. But the future belongs to decentralized teams, powered by AI and global talent. You can scale faster and at a fraction of the cost.
